Below are photos showing how I make Table Lamps and Floor Lamps. The main group shows the steps needed to make a Traditional style Floor lamp. There are also short film clips for viewers with broadband connections. The two composite photos at the bottom of the page show that the same steps are needed to make Table Lamps.

The process begins by purchasing kiln dried hardwood boards. The boards are planed smooth and cut to the sizes required to make a laminated block. If boards wider than available are needed, two boards are glued together to achieve the required width before they are planed and cut.

Glue is applied and spread on each of the cut pieces. They are then assembled together and clamped until the glue has set.

Surplus wood is cut off the newly laminated block and it is turned to roughly final shape. It is then put aside for a period of four to six weeks. The 'resting' period is to insure that the moisture introduced into the wood by the glue will equalize in the wood.

When the 'resting' period is over, the lamp base is brought to its final shape, sanded, sealed and waxed. It is then provided with a UL approved 3-way brass socket and lamp-cord with a polarized plug. A standard harp bottom (the item that holds the shade) is provided below the socket.
